What
is it about?
The
construction of the new pavilion in the Prison-rehabilitation center for Women
in Pozarevac is part of the ``Improving the living conditions in the Penalty
Institution for women in Pozarevac`` project. The new building for
accommodation has solved the problem of insufficient capacities of the
institution, offering women a more modern and safer prison.
The
only prison for women in Serbia
The
Penalty Institution for Women in Pozarevac is the only women’s prison in
Serbia, whose main accommodation building was built in 1874 and since then has
never been the subject of large investments and reconstructions.
The
correctional facility has been designed for 250 female prisoners, but during
the last several years there have been more female prisoners frequently. The
newly-built pavilion of this institution in Pozarevac can admit 160 persons.
This
is a joint project of the European Union and the Ministry of Justice (Directorate
for Execution of Criminal Sanctions), where 85% of the project value is
financed from the EU funds, and 15% from the Republic of Serbia.
The new building has 2600 square meters has been designed and built as an atrium with a ground floor and one floor, and consists of open, half-open and misdemeanor departments. The furniture for the new pavilion was made by the prisoners of the ``Zabela`` correctional facility, and the linen was sewn by the female prisoners from the Penalty Institution for women in Pozarevac, in the tailor workshop located in the prison circle.
